A wildlife officer opens the door to release Columbus from his trap.

Wildlife officers wanted to catch Columbus and move him to forests in the Cascade Mountains east of Puget Sound, where he would be safe. Whenever someone spotted the bear, wildlife officers raced to the scene. But Columbus moved so fast that they didn’t have time to set a trap for him. “We were totally exhausted just chasing him,” said Chandler.

On Wednesday morning, Columbus roamed through dense woods in the city of Federal Way. Here, wildlife officers set traps. Each trap was a section of pipe big enough for a bear to fit inside. One end of the pipe was closed. On the other end was a door that could drop to keep the bear inside.
